The idea for SpongeBob SquarePants began in the classroom. Stephen Hillenburg, a marine biologist, wanted to share his love of marine life in a creative way. After studying animation, he worked on Nickelodeon's Rocko's Modern Life, where his passion for storytelling grew. SpongeBob's character was born from a series of marine-themed comics Hillenburg created for his students, which evolved into one of the most successful cartoons of all time
